What is Federal Work-Study?

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a financial aid program that allows eligible students to earn money through part-time employment while attending school.

If you receive a Federal Work-Study award:

  • You can apply for eligible FWS positions posted in Handshake.
  • Your eligibility is determined through your FAFSA and financial need.
  • Receiving a work-study award does not automatically place you in a job—you must still apply and be hired.
  • Work-study earnings generally do not reduce your eligibility for future financial aid, although they are taxable income.

To determine whether you’ve been awarded Federal Work-Study:

  1. Log in to MySJSU.
  2. Review your Financial Aid Award.
  3. If you have a Federal Work-Study award, begin searching for eligible positions in Handshake.
